NSMA: Galway!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Thursday night saw the first regional heat of Bank of Ireland’s National Student Music Awards at the NUIG bar in Galway. After a frantic start involving three taxis, two trains and a bus, I arrived just in time to catch Highwired under a surprisingly powerful light-rig. Normally red gels wreck photographers’ heads but I rather like the deep saturation of colour. Highwired are a five-piece hailing from Limerick, taking their own stance on steadfast rock with inventive melodies and frontwoman Stacy’s attractive vocals. Wish I’d caught more of their set to hear how far they push their sound. They didn’t win a place in the final heat though perhaps they’ll expand outside the spotlight and return with more force next year.

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

As predicted, 2008’s headline act at the BOI National Student Music Awards on 24th April has been revealed as Monaghan’s vaguest achievers The Flaws. Shaping up for a productive year with a slew of parties and a new tour beginning in Donegal on Feb 8th before results for Meteor awards and the Choice Music Prize nominations are announced later in the month, The Flaws’ local postie must be getting fit under the weight of good-luck cards!

Were you at The Village last year when to see Saviours of Space wow the crowd? Fancy showing past winners Delorentos how it’s really done? Well, the heats for the National Student Music Awards have been announced and it’s time to get your demos in….
Organisers have confirmed the regional heats as:
Thur March 6th UCD

The best will be selected to compete in the finals in Dublin later in the year.

Last year The Blizzards strummed and sweated their way through a headline slot. No news yet on who’ll do the honours next year…I’d love it to be last year’s contenders The Kinetiks but am thinking The Flaws may be more likely…

The prizes are feckin’ brilliant:
